Answering your questions about neuropsychology
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need a referral?
You do not need a referral for a neuropsychological assessment if your concerns are regarding your child’s attention, learning, or intellect. However, your GP, paediatrician, or other professional may have recommended that a neuropsychological assessment may be helpful for your child.
A referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist is required for an autism assessment. This allows you to claim a Medicare rebate for children and young people under 25 years old. This rebate is only available for autism assessments.
What age groups do you assess?
Children and adolescents aged 0-18 years. Developmental assessments are available for children under 5 years of age.
What tests will my child be doing?
Your child will be asked to complete tests to look at their “thinking skills”. This is not a medical test or a blood test - it’s more like school. Your child might be asked to do tasks on the iPad, computer, or using pencil and paper. We will look at a range of different abilities and skills depending on the reason for your child’s assessment. Some of the skills and abilities we will assess are as follows:
Visual skills
Language skills
Processing speed
Working memory
Learning and memory
Executive function
Academic skills
Attention and behaviour
Emotional health
What can be assessed?
Autism, attention, intellect, giftedness, specific learning disorders (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia), and developmental delays.
Do you provide a diagnosis?
Yes. Where appropriate, formal diagnoses are provided using DSM-5-TR criteria, supported by comprehensive assessment data.
Will I receive a report?
Yes. All assessments include a detailed report with practical recommendations for families, educators, and intervention.
How long does the assessment process take?
This varies depending on the child’s age and referral concerns. Most assessments involve the following steps:
Parents completing an intake questionnaire
Parent/Educator completed questionnaires and/or interviews
Child assessment
Feedback session to discuss results
Do you offer Telehealth?
Some components of the assessment and feedback process may be offered via telephone or Telehealth, depending on the child’s age and needs.
How much does an assessment cost?
The assessment cost varies depending on the reason for referral and assessment needs. Prices range from $1600 to $3000. A quote for the assessment will be provided once the intake form has been completed.
Is there a waitlist?
The waitlist for an assessment is currently 3-weeks. Please contact Deanna directly for current availability (October, 2025).
